WHAT IS IT?

Plantar Fasciitis is one of the most common heel complaints. The plantar fascia is a thick, weblike connective tissue that connects your heel to the front of your foot. It acts as a shock absorber and supports the arch of your foot, helping you walk. The Plantar Fascia can become inflammed, damaged and/or micro tears to the planter fascia ligament can occur, causing this pain and stiffness at the bottom of your foot or heel.

The causes of plantar fasciitis are unclear although risk factors include:
  • Overuse during a certain activity/exercise
  • Obesity
  • Excessive inward rolling of the foot
  • Standing on hard surfaces for long periods
  • Leg length inequality
  • Flat feet
  • Improper foot wear

SYMPTOMS
  • Pain at the bottom of heel or mid foot and sometimes forefoot usually in one foot but can be both
  • Gradual onset of pain
  • Dull, sharp, burning or achy pain
  • Usually worse in the morning or after long periods of sitting or lying.
  • Pain during or after an activity

TREATMENT
  • Rest or change/alter current activity
  • Medication that reduces inflammation
  • Massage
  • Manipulation
  • Ice
  • Tape
  • Weight loss
  • Physical therapy and rehabilitation is very important to help stretch your Plantar Fascia as well as your Achilles Tendons. A Chiropractor can show you exercises to strengthen the muscles in your lower leg, including your Achilles Tendons which are important in your recovery and to help lesson the work load on your Plantar Fascia.
  • Depending on severity of the condition – orthotics maybe be required as assessed by a Podiatrist, splinting, steroid injections or even surgery.

If you suffer from Plantar Fasciitis or general foot pain, we at Health Associates highly recommend visiting our health professionals (Chiropractor, and/or Podiatry). If you are local to the Loftus area, Health Associates would be more than happy to help you with these issues and answer any questions you may have.
